Projects
-
Codman Research Group, a provider of health care utilization systems,
chose Long Hill to build a data warehouse for their client,
Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Nebraska. Long Hill provided technical
leadership, project management, ETL (extraction, transformation, and loading)
functions, and database design and implementation.
- NEC Technologies retained Long Hill to research high-availability
systems, and produce a set of recommendations to improve the
reliability, availability, and serviceability of their servers. Long
Hill wrote a well-received survey on high-availability computing for NEC.
-
Client/Server Retail Management System for Gillette Corporation, using
Sybase and PowerBuilder.
-
Data warehouse for GTE Sylvania, for summarized access to their
legacy MVS/IMS data, using SQL Server and Powerbuilder.
Data Communications and Operating Systems
-
Network Management for Xyplex, a communications equipment vendor.
Designed and implemented an SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol)
agent and numerous MIBs (Management Information Bases)
for several releases of their bridge/router and intelligent hub product lines.
-
Refinement and implementation of a distributed routing protocol for data
communication networks that achieves minimum delay and takes topological
changes into consideration. (Now, this was fun! This work was done when
Marty was an employee of Interactive Data Corporation, and remains one of
his favorite projects.)
-
There's lots more communications work: packet networks, an early micro-network
protocol that provided and error-free and flow-controlled channel for dial-up
connections (before modems did this work), network access protocols, network
management ...
-
Also as an Interactive employee, Marty worked on a modified version
of IBM's VM/CMS Operating System. He delved into the virtual memory, scheduling,
dispatching, I/O and other subsystems. Water-cooled mainframes, banks of
disk drives each the size of a washing machine, core memory. This
was fun, too.

Marty's skills and effort were invaluable for solving a particularly
thorny problem for a major customer. On short notice, Marty was
able work seamlessly with our on-site technical support team.
